School History
Birmingham-Southern College was established in 1856 when the Southern University and Birmingham College merged together. Up until 1918, the two schools operated in their respective facilities until merging under the same campus. The dedication of these two individual schools created a powerful force for students to embrace their education, get empowered by their surroundings and implement critical thinking in the outside world. Although the campus grounds have undergone updates and the additions of new buildings, some of the original buildings from Birmingham College are still present to show the schools rich history and future longevity.

Campus Life
The location of Birmingham-Southern College could not offer a more comfortable and quaint setting to help students focus on their studies. Located just a few miles from downtown Birmingham, the school resides on nearly 200 acres of wooded serenity – offering privacy that is just outside of the city. The school is home to nearly 50 buildings including residential halls, classrooms and athletic facilities – as well as the dining hall and of course, the infamous Fraternity Row.
Students have their choice to get involved with nearly 100 different organizations that are both student run and operated. These organization range from theatre and performing arts related organizations to community service and athletic based groups, which all allow students the room and experience they need to grow into well-rounded adults – ready to spread their wings in the work world.
The atmosphere of campus life at Birmingham-Southern offers students a solid foundation of community and overall well-being. Student Development is highly encouraged at Birmingham-Southern College. The school provides plenty of performing arts activities located at the Durbin Gallery, sports games throughout the campus grounds or just a comfortable and quiet setting in the Café House to catch up with friends or studies – everything a student could need is located right on campus.
Financial Aid
Birmingham-Southern College has dedicated faculty members and counselors available on campus to assist students with evaluating and deciding the financial aid resources that best meet their needs. Students can take advantage of customized financial aid packages that are specifically created for their situation and offer various options to help alleviate tuition and expenses.
The Financial Aid Office is open and available throughout the entire calendar year for students. Academic and athletic scholarships are available for those who qualify, as well as a wide array of different grant programs. Counselors will assist students in exploring any and all options available to them, directly or indirectly provided by Birmingham-Southern.
