Erskine College provides students with a well-rounded atmosphere based on an in-depth liberal arts foundation and the Christian beliefs of civility and service. Offering undergraduate degrees in a variety of majors, Erskine College is most widely known for its liberal arts and theology programs offered. Many students take advantage of the double major programs available that allow students to utilize a wider range of resources to enhance their education and professional resume. Students are encouraged to participate in all facets of college life offered at Erskine College such as the study abroad program, student organizations and Greek Life. The majority of faculty members have advanced degrees in their fields, which give students an advantage in learning styles and practicality. It is this type of surrounding that encourages students to engage in discussion and action, developing their leadership skills and ability to apply critical thinking to find solutions.
The main goal of Erskine College is to provide students with the resources and skills they need to excel in an ever-changing world; individually and academically. Helping students to achieve their goals is a priority that has been passed down from the initial founders. In addition to the undergraduate programs offered at Erskine College, students can also take advantage of the infamous Seminary Mission graduate program, fully preparing themselves for vibrant futures in ministries and community organizations.
School History
The school was founded in 1839 by the Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church, which had originally established in South Carolina. Erskine College was initially operated as a men’s academy under a different name until 1835 when it was chartered as Erskine College and deemed the first church-related college in the state that offered a four year degree program. Although the school had grown large enough to survive through the Civil War, the experience did take financial toll on the endowment of the school. After the war had ended, loyal supporters of the school had combined efforts to donate funds that built the infamous Erskine Building as well as rebuilt the various departments of the schools.
Erskine College has been accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges since 1925, shortly after the merger of schools.
In 1892, Erskine College established the auditorium that enhanced the performing arts and lecture curriculum at the College. Just two years later, Erskine College began admitting female students, and by 1899, made the school fully coeducational. In 1859 Due West Female College was founded, later merging with Erskine College in 1927, creating an equal balance of students on campus. Erskine College has struggled through many historical events including the Great Depression. However in the early 1950s, after the end of World War II, enrollment was stimulated and graduating classes became larger.
Campus Life
Life on the Erskine College campus consists of strong values, close relationships and the daily aspects of Christian service. There are plenty of entertainment options and amenities to utilize on campus such as dining services, the bookstore and the campus chapel, all of which are open to students at all times. Many students get involved with the student run organizations and clubs such as the Student Government and community service programs. This enables students the room they need to grow and mature into future leaders. Maintaining this type of close-knit community is a high priority at Erskine College.
On campus, the Student Government Association works diligently to ensure student safety and continued success at all times. Both campus and residential life are protected and governed by the SGA Constitution; a constitution that was created by the student body. Political organizations at Erskine College are just as popular as the spiritual groups and sports teams amongst the students. Students that are not members of these organizations can be found attending the activities and events to showcase their support and school spirit. There are over 40 student-run organizations that Erskine College encourages students to participate in, including honor societies and sorority and fraternity houses.
Since the majority of students that attend Erskine College prefer to live on campus, the atmosphere throughout the classrooms and residence halls remain in high spirit and based on civility in order to help students transition to college life with ease. Students can choose to live in the various residence halls, apartment style housing and townhouses, in addition to the fraternity and sorority houses. Student housing is available on and off campus, located near shuttles and bus services for an easy commute to class.
Financial Aid
Financial aid is taken very seriously at Erskine College, which is why counselors and members of the SGA are available to assist students in researching and obtaining various funding options. Erskine College accepts all forms of government funded loans and scholarships, most commonly obtained by TAP and FAFSA loans. However, the college also accepts private funding based on academic achievements. Upon admission, all students are considered for various scholarships and grants funded independently by the school. These funding options may assist students with fees ranging from book expenses and supplies to full tuition.
Students are encouraged to explore all financial aid options in order to maximize their education and reduce the stress of paying for school. Financial aid counselors can assist students in the application process throughout the year to ensure funding is secured for each semester effectively. In addition to traditional funding options, many students take advantage of the work-study programs available at Erskine College, which allow students to take employment positions on and off campus while attending class.
