School History
Founded in 1876, Juniata College was established by three family members that held the same core values on education and career structure – brothers Henry and John Brumbaugh and Dr. Andrew Brumbaugh, their cousin. Nearly five years later, the school was quarantined and shut down due to an outbreak of smallpox for several months. It was during this rough time period that one of the most famous traditions of Juniata College was born! Three out of state students refused to leave the campus, fearing that they would not be able to return to Juniata. In turn, they were forced to live off campus in an old house until the school was secured and relieved of the quarantine status. In honor of these students, Juniata College hosts a Mountain day each year where all classes are cancelled and students are invited to a picnic in the state park, followed by a full day of outdoor activities and nature walks!
Juniata College received its accreditation from the Commission of higher Education of the Middle Association of Colleges as a private four year college facility.
In 1902, Juniata College established the debate team, which even today is based on the encouragement of students to express their differences with open minds and intellectual reasoning. It is these core values that enables Juniata College to still be recognized for its incredible debate team. In the late 1920s, Juniata College constructed the very first residence hall that still stands as one of the oldest buildings on campus, The Cloister.
