Linfield College consists of three divisions on two campuses – all dedicated to helping students receive the most valuable education possible. Currently offering over 45 majors of study, as well as an adult undergraduate division, Linfield College consistently ranks as one of the most convenient colleges in the nation. Although there are three programs that students can enroll in, the McMinnville and Portland campuses are the only programs to offer residential housing. Both faculty and students are dedicated to helping others in any way possible. For this reason, the school offers an extensive medical program from the Portland campus which has strong affiliations with the local Good Samaritan hospital, providing many internships and work-study positions to students who are studying the field.
Providing a strong support system for students is of the utmost priority to Linfield College and faculty members. Students can find a wide array of services such as health, wellness, career counseling and professional services to help guide them in the right direction for a successful future. Many students that graduate from Linfield College go on to establish solid, professional careers in leadership positions. In fact, many students often go on to become strong minded global citizens – consistently taking their career and personal life to the next level.
School History
Founded in the mid 1800s as the Baptist College at McMinnville, Linfield College received its charter in 1858 from the Oregon Territorial Legislature. It was not until years later that the college was renamed and later went on to award its first baccalaureate degree in 1884. In 1922, Frances Ross Linfield donated property to the school, which the school had sold for more than $250,000. With intentions of using the funds to secure the existence of the college, the school was renamed in honor of her late husband, Reverend George Fisher Linfield. Over the years, Linfield College has maintained its strong Baptist heritage while adding a more modern selection to their programs and curriculum.
The Linfield Research Institute was established in 1956, this program enabled and encouraged students to work with faculty and staff members to develop new research. To date, it is this facility that is widely responsible to the success and recognition of the scientific student research.
Shortly after, in 1975, the Linfield Division of Continuing Education was established, providing a strong foundation for adults looking to complete their coursework and earn their degree. This division had provided convenient scheduling specifically designed for working adults and over time, incorporated online classes to the program as well. One year later, in 1976, Linfield College established their first international exchange program, with a university in Japan. This enabled students in both facilities to travel abroad to enhance their studies. Today this program consists of over 10 countries for students to study in.
Campus Life
Embracing diversity is a strong focus at Linfield College, inspiring students to get involved with communities, international study opportunities as well as the various activities around campus. With such a diverse blend of students from 47 states and almost 15 countries, students are encouraged to optimize their college experience by learning about different cultures, religions and geography to ensure civility and equality. Following the founders footsteps, students at Linfield College are also encouraged to participate in community activities that stimulate their intellect as well as help them to develop skills and talents. The majority of students actively participate in these events and activities located both on and off campus, while many choose to get involved with the daily operations of such.
There are over 80 organizations for students to get involved in at Linfield College. Most of these organizations are student-established and operated. The McMinnville campus has plenty of events scheduled throughout the year including day trips, weekend trips, festivals, live performances and sporting events. With the metropolitan city of Portland only a 45 minute drive away, students from both campuses are invited and encouraged to get to know each other. Linfield College is dedicated to maintaining a strong support system for students, and offers a safe and enriching environment all year round.
Students who choose to live on campus can take advantage of the various residence halls and apartment complexes located throughout the campus. Housing is established by interest, major and athletic affiliations to ensure that students are surrounded by like-minded peers at all times. At Linfield College, providing this type of atmosphere enables students the room and support they need to grow into professional, mature adults with bright futures.
Financial Aid
Linfield College understands the importance of obtaining financial aid to pay for school. This includes finding the funds that not only cover the tuition costs, but also student expenses as well, such as books, materials, supplies and personal expenses while attending school. For this reason, Linfield Financial Advisors are dedicated to helping students research and obtain the most logical financial aid that suits their individual needs. Many students, especially first year students, are unaware of the variety of aid that is available. This is why faculty and staff go above and beyond to help students inquire, apply and obtain financial aid.
Linfield College offers students a variety of merit-based awards, need-based grants and scholarships to help pay for tuition. Many students take advantage of the flexible work-study program at Linfield to remain independent without increasing the amount of loans they receive. Many students take advantage of applying for multiple forms of financial aid to ensure they receive enough to cover them each semester. Advisors are available all year round to ensure that all students have continuous aid for each semester, even the early enrollment programs.
