True to the southern roots of hospitality, Millsaps College offers students a lively home-away-from-home surrounding, while providing a high quality liberal arts education on campus. Students can take advantage of the smaller sized classrooms that contain less than 15 students and a student faculty ratio of 9:1 to challenge their education and research more effectively with their professors. The community within the campus walls consists of students representing nearly half of the United States and over 23 countries. The majority of faculty members hold advance degrees in their study area – some even Millsaps College alumni themselves.
Many students attend Millsaps College to pursue degrees in the various professional studies offered at the school. The Business Administration and Management program offered accounts for nearly 23% of students, while the rest of the student actively pursue one, or two, of the additional 85 majors and minors offered. Millsaps College students looking for a more scientific based education can take part in the astound Biology program or popular Political Science and Government degrees. Despite your preference, the strong community and family established at Millsaps College welcomes all students around the world to study, grow and live as a part of this legendary academic community.
School History
As the 19th Century approached, Major Reuben Webster Millsaps, returned from the Civil War, determined to help his community advance into the new era. In 1890, he offered a gift in the amount of $50,000 to establish a college for the local community. His intentions, efforts and monetary contributions were then matched by the Mississippi Methodists to establish the facility that grew in his honor. Since Millsaps was a dedicated businessman, equally loyal to his church and community, these same values were used to build the school upon. The early curriculum offered liberal arts courses and seminary training for Christian students. In 1901, the College honored its first woman graduate, Mary Letitia Holloman, followed by Sing-Ung Zung in 1908, who was honored as the first international student to graduate from the College as well.
Millsaps College is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. The College is also acknowledged by the American Association of University Woman and a member of the University Senate of the United Methodist Church.
Using the 19th Century to develop and evolve, Millsaps College experienced various changes and advancements such as the development of the first building in 1914, infamously known as Old Main. However, when Major Millsaps died in 1916, his life, dedication and accomplishments were far from subsided. Buried on campus, the Board of Trustees vowed that his memory would live on through vision of the College and passed down through generations of future graduates. By 1931, the College built a gas well on campus in order to heat the facility cost effectively, not to raise tuition and costs. Since implemented, the College has been able to offer students financial and academic advantages without discrimination of financial status.
Campus Life
Jus as the Millsaps College Fight song states, “Millsaps’ fame her Majors have made. Never let her glory fade!” Millsaps students take pride in their school, showcasing their spirit and involvement through the daily campus life. Both inside and outside of the classroom, students are engaged and intellectually stimulated with events such as guest lecturers from famous professionals and speakers from across the world or enjoying one of the many live performances by the Music, Arts & Theatre majors throughout the year. First year students attend their orientation to introduce them into the campus community, while members of the Residence Life Staff and their peers work together throughout the year to assist in day-to-day occurrences. At Millsaps College, the student body works together to maintain and operate the majority of campus life. All activities that take place on campus are organized by students and scheduled by the Event Scheduling coordinators or members of the Hall Activities Center.
With community service being a huge part of the Millsaps College heritage, the student body actively participates in local communities on local, national and global levels – organizing various on-going missions in various distressed communities. The Intercultural and International Student Programs and Services enables students from both the United States and foreign countries alike, to travel abroad to pursue their education further. Although the majority of students spend at least one semester abroad during their college experience, many students prefer to stay on campus and take advantage of over 80 clubs and special interest organizations instead.
The residence halls located on the Millsaps College campus offer students double occupancy rooms that are furnished with all the essentials living and work space needs such as a bed, dresser and desk. All residence halls also include an on-site laundry facility that students are free to use as they please. With Greek Life also being a popular choice amongst campus, many students also choose to dorm in one of the sorority and fraternity housing as well.
Financial Aid
Students hat attend Millsaps College are presented with a wide variety of financial aid options and resources to ensure they comfortably move forward with their education. The College believes that all students should be able to pursue a challenging and in-depth education, regardless of financial stature. For this reason, Millsaps College provides students with independent grants and scholarships, awarded for academic achievement. Many students may also qualify for the various athletic and artistic based scholarships as well.
Millsaps College accepts and encourages students o apply for all forms of both Federal and State financial aid options, which may include both government funded grants and loans. Students are encouraged to consult with a member of the Financial Aid Office before each semester to ensure that all applications and requirements are fulfilled to obtain the funding, as well as continuously help students throughout the year manage their financial aid funding.
