Life at Washington College can be anything but mundane with between the social activities and academic calendar to the wide array or organizations that meet on and off campus – students have plenty of ways to occupy their time effectively. Being located on the Chester River gives the school a sense of calmness and serenity that has helped students focus on their four year journey to greatness! Not only does this offer a scenic environment for students to appreciate but it also has been said to inspire the creative energy in students as well.

Washington College places a strong emphasis on building a solid foundation for students both inside the classrooms, as well as on and off campus. For this reason, the school maintains a close faculty to student ratio to ensure that each student gets the attention they need and deserve to flourish during their college experience. Washington College offers a healthy balance of a strong support system and the resources needed to enable students to work privately as well. Offering liberal arts programs as well as a variety of other interest areas, this school encourages students to push the envelope of traditional education to the max!

School History

Washington College remains the 10th oldest college campus in the country, still offering solid liberal arts education to students. Originally founded in 1782 in honor of president George Washington, the school was established to provide students with the education and skills of national leaders – focusing on liberal arts, civility and equality. The history of the college runs just as deep as the architecture, with George Washington himself serving on the original board of directors for the school. Since Washington College focuses on provided a solid liberal arts foundation, it offers an extensive creative writing program that was been implemented and mastered over the last 100 years to offer students an innovative curriculum that helps them hone their talents and personal form.

Washington College received its Charter on May 24, 1782.

The undergraduate program at Washington College has always focused equally on academic and athletic involvement of the students. Believed to be vital to the balance completion for students, encouraging the involvement in athletic teams and other organizations help instill a sense of responsibility and team work in students – vital qualities needed to survive in the real world. These morals and values were adapted from the very early years of Washington College, while the school was still operating under the bylaws of Kent County School. Today, Washington College is the byproduct of the efforts of the colonial founders, leaders and educators that worked together to establish a well rounded, academic environment for students to flourish in their personal and professional futures.

Campus Life

Life on the Washington College campus offers a rich and supportive atmosphere for students to transition and flourish. With approximately 1,400 students roaming the campus on average, making friends that can relate to you is not a hard task. Our students all share the common values of helping others while achieving their individual goals. These values are showcased by the variety of student organized groups, events and interest organizations that meet around campus and host fundraisers, student services and mentorship programs that lend the helping hands needed.

The eclectic background of the students delivers a healthy diversity amongst campus grounds through the various passions for liberal and performing arts. The majority of students take part in a varsity sport and/or are members of the Honor Society program to enrich their college experience. Mentors and Student Services offices are located throughout the campus to help students learn how to balance their studies and extracurricular activities so that no one falls behind. The Student Government is also very popular amongst students, and provides the essential core values needed to pursue leadership careers.

Students that choose to live on campus can experience a strong sense of acceptance and equality in the residential community. These housing halls and apartment complexes are located both on and off campus, just a few miles outside of the main surrounding cities. Students can find all the essential amenities on campus including the bookstore, library, fitness center and performing arts center, in addition to the dining hall and student service centers as well.

Financial Aid

Paying for college can be a hardship in itself. Washington College strongly believes that when students can secure reliable financial aid, they are more likely to succeed and follow through with their academic achievements. For this reason, Washington College offers a strong dedication to helping students secure financial aid and explore all the possibilities available to them. This includes scholarships, grants, loans and even work study programs. Counselors are available all year round to assist students and answer any questions to ensure on-time enrollment.

Although there are several thousand financial aid resources available to students, the Financial Aid Advisors at Washington College make themselves easily accessible to helping students narrow down their best choices for aid. Counselors can help students research, qualify and maintain financial aid through programs offered by State, Federal and on campus resources.
