William Jewell College is known for providing an excellent education by mastering the art of connecting talented students with effective mentors. The school remains dedicated to upholding its heritage and educational standards for students, continuing to add new courses, majors and programs that optimize the learning experience. William Jewell College has received many honors for its structure, faculty dedication and student involvement over the years. Upholding these honors and good standing with the student body is of the utmost importance at William Jewell College.

Offering an enriched liberal arts education as well as degree programs in a variety of majors and minors, William Jewell College students can obtain a well balanced education platform that they can continue to build on for the rest of their lives. William Jewell College is known for developing unique majors such as the newly implemented Applied Critical Thought and Inquiry major that encourages students to push their education to the max, taking advantage of study abroad programs and community involvement where they can enhance their skills and awareness to diversity in the world.

School History

William Jewell College was founded and named after Dr. William Jewell who was a physician, legislator and Baptist layman. For many years during the mid 1800s, Jewell offered Baptists over $10,000 in land in order to build a college. However it was not until 1849 did the organization accept the offer and receive charter from the Missouri legislature to establish the campus grounds and conduct classes. At the time, it became one of the first 4-year colleges for men in the Mississippi area. It was an uphill battle between the surrounding towns and cities as to which one would host the college campus. However, with the help of leader Alexander Doniphan, Clay County was chosen to host the college at Liberty.

William Jewell College is accredited by The Higher Learning Commission and the North Central Association.

During the Civil War, William Jewell College campus opened its doors to Federal troops who would use the high point at Jewell Hall to survey the land. By 1896, the college had added a gymnasium to the campus and the years to follow introduced various sports teams to support the school. In 1883, the baseball team was established, followed by a football team in 1888. During World War I, many women began enrolling at the College,, however it was not until 1920 that women were able to enroll in school under the same terms as men. By the time World War II began, William Jewell College became home to a newly developed naval flight prep school as well.

Campus Life

With such a rich history seeping within the grounds of the campus, it is no surprise that campus life for students is filled with nothing but intellectually stimulating and entertaining events to participate in. There are over 30 nationally affiliated clubs and organizations that students can participate in to develop the leadership skills and qualities that will help them succeed in their life after graduation. Both in and out of the classroom, students are surrounded by a strong willed community of like individuals, all striving to maximize their college experience. Since most students that attend William Jewell College are active within the campus and surrounding community, the College remains active in the community service programs set up throughout the campus. These programs enable students to go out into the community and international parts of the world, helping others establish their success as well.

First year students have the option to live on campus in one of the many housing options such as residence halls and apartment complexes. Being surrounded by peers that are experiencing the same unfamiliar surroundings enables students to adapt easier to the transition into college life. Seasoned students also have the option to house in many of the townhouses and off campus housing available at William Jewell College. In fact, many students take advantage of Greek Life at the College, pledging to live in one of the fraternity or sorority houses located throughout campus.

In addition to the events and organization held on campus, students can also find plenty of essentials to utilize such as health resources, spiritual guidance and dinning services. The campus offers an interactive chapel schedule for students to maintain their religious traditions while at school. Residence life at William Jewell College can be pretty overwhelming for students, which is why members of the residence life staff as well as Office of Student Services is readily available to help students adjust, participate and maintain a healthy social life in addition to their academic schedules.

Financial Aid

William Jewell College offers a wide range of financial aid options to students including loans, scholarships and grant funding. Students are encouraged to explore all forms of financial aid in which they may qualify for to help alleviate the stress of paying for school out of pocket. Financial aid counselors are available to assist students in finding the right funding for their specific needs. This may include need based grants given by government agencies, merit awards granted by special interest groups or federal grant opportunities that may be available.

For students that do not qualify for full tuition scholarships or grant options, William Jewell College presents a strong work study program that creates over 80 jobs on campus for students to obtain the funds needed to manage their daily lives while at school. Students can also take advantage of the wealth of employment positions located off campus in professional and community based settings – giving them hands on experience in their course work studies.
