Although Wittenberg University has built their foundation on the liberal arts focus of education, the University currently offers a wide array of programs that offer students the same ethics in the major of their choice. The humanities, as well as the arts and sciences programs have attracted students from all over the country as well as internationally. In fact, the majority of Wittenberg University graduates obtain paid positions after graduation stemming from internship opportunities utilized during their studies.
School History
Established in 1845 by the English Evangelical Lutheran Synod of Ohio, Wittenberg University has been a powerful educational foundation for both the local community and students on a global platform. The school was named after the town Wittenberg in Germany that was the home of Martin Luther and the location where he posted his famous works, 95 theses. Following the footsteps of previous educators such as A.B. Grahm, teacher and superintendent, Wittenberg University has built their foundation on providing students with an education that empowers them to push forward and become leaders in their community and professions. The founding pastors decided that it was important to provide Lutheran students with an American education, teaching them in English, rather than the traditional German to help them get accustomed to the world. When opened, there were only 7 students enrolled in the University, however by the end of the academic calendar, enrollment rose to almost 72 students – all studying the extensive liberal arts program.
Wittenberg University is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as well as a member of the Higher Learning Commission. The University has acquired special accreditation in Teacher Education as well.
Although Wittenberg University had originally opened solely as a white boys’ college, in 1874 the University opened its doors to women students as well. Nearly one year later, Wittenberg University became a fully coeducational college that offered freedom of enrollment to all genders, cultures, religions and races equally. While maintaining their strong Lutheran affiliations, Wittenberg University encouraged students to explore diversity to their fullest ability, to get involved with communities and obtain a solid understanding and acceptance of all people.
Campus Life
Wittenberg University offers students over 150 organizations and clubs to participate in, The school is dedicated to providing students with events and activities that inspire, engage and help them develop the skills needed to excel individually and professionally. The University encourages students to mingle on and off campus with their peers, helping them to establish lifelong friendships and irreplaceable experiences. There are over 10 sororities and fraternities that students can pledge for, optimizing their college experience and developing a strong community of peers that will help them grow as individuals throughout their stay at Wittenberg. Despite personal preference, Wittenberg University offers an array of entertainment options for all students that provides fun and intellectual stimulation as well.
Over 90% of Wittenberg University students live on campus in one of the residential houses or apartment complexes. Many students also live in the fraternity and sorority houses located throughout the campus. This adds a wealth of opportunity for students to build and strengthen their relationships, get the inside scoop on college life from the undergrad students and of course, live through their college years with the strong support of their peers. Members of the student government and resident life staff also reside in all housing complexes to assist students in anything they may need during their stay.
Many of the Wittenberg University students take advantage of the University’s astounding athletic teams. Wittenberg continuously competes in the NCAA Division III championship tournaments for several sports that allow students to showcase their talent, build friendships and develop skills that will change their lives forever such as teamwork, trust and dependability. Whether they are in the game or cheering on the sidelines – Wittenberg University students love to show their support and team spirit whenever possible!
Financial Aid
Wittenberg University does not expect students to pay for the cost of college upfront or without help. In fact, over 95% of students that attend Wittenberg University obtain some type of financial aid. For this reason, the staff and faculty at Wittenberg are quite experienced helping students research and obtain financial aid options. The University is dedicating to alleviating as much stress as possible for students, such as the financial aspect of school. Financial Advisors are well aware that the cost of school does not just entail tuition and cost of books!
Students may apply for financial aid online or through the Admissions Office throughout the year, although deadlines may vary per individual loan. Wittenberg University accepts all forms of government funded loans and scholarships including TAP and FAFSA loans. Many students are eligible for need based grants offered at Wittenberg to help them get through the semester. Work study programs are also available that enable students to obtain jobs both on and off campus. Many of these jobs are in coursework field, helping students to utilize their education hands-on.
